Why Ball Really is Life: Diversify Yourself

My name is Alexa Certo, I am a senior and am graduating from the IB program. Here is my hot take on why basketball, and sports in general, are important to the highschool experience. Here are my two cents for basketball and sports in highschool, my go to free time activity.

Basketball:

Lebron James. Michael Jordan. Larry Bird. Kobe Bryant. Iconic names ingrained into American culture. Basketball is a huge part of my life, but also many others. I began playing basketball at a young age, balling in the YMCA courts. I began playing more seriously in ninth grade and played varsity for four years all up until this year.

Basketball was an important extracurricular activity for me. But, I have gracefully ended my career. It was enriching in terms of my development. Basketball taught me how to fight. Beyond that, it helped shape my identity. And not to be corny, but the game of basketball is far more than throwing a leather ball into a net and praying it goes in. Basketball is a mind game. Constantly overcoming metal barriers is a large part of being an athlete and participating in a sport. Whether talking trash on the court and getting in your opponents head or trying to come back, sports teach you so much about life skills.

Why sports are important:

  • Sports teach you life lessons and keep you connected to other people.

  • Sports broaden your social circle, bringing you closer to people you otherwise would not have known. A teammate bond is a bond unmatched and truly unparalleled, if you like the team, I suppose.

  • They keep you active, surely this is far more common knowledge though.

  • Physical health has a strong link to mental health. Keep pushing and you will shine through. Similarly, I feel like my days without sports are far duller.

  • March madness. Please, if you do not watch sports, know March Madness energy is completely unparalleled. College sports, to watch, are built differently.

  • Culture. You can bond with people over teams or sports in general. Sports are for the people.

Overall:

I do not intend for this to come off as I am the biggest jock on the planet. I, however, know there is a solid cultural importance to sports and they help you. Balance is important, whether that means school and sports or something else, you should look into sports, especially basketball. Finding more interests is beneficial for bettering your high school experience. Go for it! If you already play basketball, or sports, stick with it. You can do it!

-Comment below if you play any sports inside or outside of school. And if you play basketball, what your pick was for March Madness?-
