Karlie Smith, NHS Member, AP student
Hello, I am Karlie Smith, a junior NHS student and a part of the AP program. As a high school student it is extremely likely that throughout your time here you will have questions and you may not know who to talk to about them. Our school has so many resources available to help but it can be hard to find the right one. Some resources that our school has include the guidance office, college and career center and your teachers.
The Guidance office:
The DMHS Counselors office is located right next to the main office and we have 5 counselors who want to help. Each counselor is in charge of a portion of students based on their last name. So if your last name starts with A-Deh you would make appointments with Mrs. Gilbreath; Dem-I have Mrs. Jones; J-Me have Mrs. Okun; Mi-She have Mrs. Pacheco; And Shi-Z have Mrs. Cooper. Counselors are equipped to help with a variety of things for students. For example they are the prime resource at the school for mental health struggles during school. Also they will help you pick the correct classes for the next year or switch you out of classes if you are struggling. If you ever need to make an appointment with your counselor there is a link on the DMHS website under the Counseling tab. Just click on that link and it will take you to your specific counselors page. Once you get to this page you will see your counselors availability and when they have open appointments. Once you select a time that works for you, you can pick if you want to meet in person, over teams or through the phone.
The College and Career Center:
Mrs. Dorsch in the College and career center is another great source for any information for your post high school plans. She has tons of information for all things college such as admissions, scholarships, and stats. She also is informed on other post high school things such as technical skills schooling. She is available by appointment as well as by email. Mrs. Dorsch organizes many resources for students such as college visits, informational presentations, and military visits. Make sure to check out the things she offers because they will give you helpful connections for your future and it will help you create a strong relationship with Mrs. Dash. When you are a senior she is also available to check over your applications and help you if you have any further questions. She can help weigh out the pros and cons for a college to help you decide where to go. You can see what she has planned on the DMTV announcements or the DMHS website under the college and career tab.
Your Teachers:
As I'm sure you have been told before, your teachers should be your first contact when you have any class or grade specific questions but teachers can answer so much more for you. Many times you may need a teacher's help with applications for a club where they need to fill out some form of recommendation for you so it is important that you are well behaved and do all your work so that your teachers can help you get involved in things you want to do. Also if you are interested in starting your own club you are going to need a teacher sponsor. This teacher has to agree to help you start your club and sign off on it so they will be very helpful. If you have questions about your future your teachers can also be a great resource. During office hours or free time during class you can ask them about their college experience and how they felt about it. Many of your teachers want to help you and answer questions for you so make sure to use that just don’t be disruptive or disrespectful.
In addition to these 3 resources there are many more people at this school that are committed to you and these resources will be able to connect you with all the right people. Good luck and Don't be afraid to reach out when you need it!
