My name is Adam Nachtrab, I am a junior involved in NHS and AP classes, and here are my two cents about good test-taking strategies for school. Since I am in AP classes, I have to do well on tests throughout the year to prepare for AP tests. To do well on these tests, I have to be smart about how I prepare for and take them.
Now, before we talk about what to do during a test, let’s talk about what to do before you take one.
Test Preparation Tips
Pay attention in class! Your teacher will give you the information you need to know, so make sure you focus when they are teaching.
When preparing for a test, you need to know WHAT the test is about. Study topics the test will be over and ensure you understand all of the information.
Complete any reviews or study guides your teacher gives you.
Don’t cram the night before. Instead, plan ahead and spread out your study time.
Get everything ready the night before your test so that you don’t rush around or forget anything the morning of the test.
Get plenty of sleep before the test so you are fully awake when you take it.
Eat a full breakfast the morning of your test so that you have enough energy for the day.
Once you’ve done everything you can to prepare for the test, there are a few things you can do while taking the test to score better and complete it faster.
Test Taking Tips
If you get stuck on a question, move on to the next one and come back later. A future question could have information that helps answer a previous question you were stuck on, or you could remember something that helps you answer the question you were stuck on.
If a question is multiple-choice, eliminate answers that don’t make sense.
If there are two answers that mean the same thing, they can usually be eliminated.
If you are running out of time, you can fill in answers even if you haven’t done the questions. It is better to get a question wrong with a guess than get it wrong for leaving it blank (make sure wrong answers aren’t negative points though).
Just because you have 4 questions with the same answer in a row doesn’t mean one of them is wrong! It can just be a coincidence.
While checking your answers over can help, make sure you finished the test before you do. If you are struggling with completing the test, try and finish it instead of reviewing answers you know are right.
In Conclusion
When you finish your test, know that no matter what grade you receive, you did your best. As long as you use these tips to prepare for and take your tests, you will do great!
