The STAMP test

Karlie Smith, AP Student, NHS Member

Hello, my name is Karlie Smith and I am a junior student in the AP program and NHS. I am also in Spanish IV this year which means I took the STAMP test.

What is the STAMP test?

For anyone who is unfamiliar with STAMP testing it is a standardized test to determine if you graduate with a seal of biliteracy on your diploma. You will only be able to take this test if you have been in your language classes for 4 years. Our school offers a free STAMP test to any student in year 4 of Spanish, French, Russian, Mandarin or Japanese. The purpose of this test is to get your seal of biliteracy on your diploma but there are other ways to obtain this. For example you can score a 3 or higher on the AP test for your language or a 4 on your IB test for your language.

How it is Graded

The stamp test has 4 different sections. They are Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Each section is scored on a scale from 1-9 ranging from novice-advanced. If you score a 5 or higher on all sections you will be awarded the seal of biliteracy. This website gives all the information about how you will be graded and the topics covered in the test. https://avantassessment.com/stamp4s/benchmark-rubric-guide If you are planning on taking the test you should check out the website to know what to study and do practice tests. Your language teacher should inform you of all the information you need to know and they will proctor your test. Your language teacher is not in charge of grading the test so if there are things that your teacher allows you to do that are not correct in the language you may be docked points.

Why you should take it

In addition to getting a seal of biliteracy which will help you with your future endeavors you will also be able to see where you stand on a scale of being fluent in your language. That can help you determine what you should be working on when you continue your studies. If you pass the test and are considered bilingual it will help you greatly in your future. For example it can set you apart from other students applying to the same college or job. Also you can apply for jobs that specifically need bilingual people. Also as a student at DMHS you are given the test for free so you might as well take it and see if you pass. Your teachers have been preparing you for this for the past 4 years so test what you know!
