Many contemplate joining their school’s wide range of clubs, but oftentimes they ponder how exactly their extracurricular activities will affect them down the road. Surprisingly, there are a lot more benefits to joining a club than people realize!
A considerable motivation and benefit behind joining various school clubs and organizations is the daunting college application process, in which you must stand out from the thousands of other students applying. You may ask, how come? Joining a club demonstrates to colleges your involvement and interests which makes you more appealing as a future student to whichever university in question.
Each club has its distinct skill set in correlation to it. Whether that is to speak up on important issues in the community or enhance one’s artistic ability, you will learn valuable skills that may be beneficial in your future career or as you navigate life’s punches. For example, I have been in the Speech & Debate club since freshman year. Since then, I have learned debate and research skills and most importantly, I learned to publicly speak without feeling nervous. This was huge for me because I used to really struggle with public speaking. Take my personal experience into consideration because you could also learn something you might have otherwise never acknowledged as advantageous!
Another great benefit that is usually overlooked is networking opportunities! Now in case you aren’t familiar with this, it’s basically when one interacts to exchange information which leads to developing social/professional contacts. Now, you may be wondering how does this have anything to do with the benefits of joining a club? Well, many times based on the club of your choosing, you get to meet or interact with people of importance which can lead to future opportunities. Even getting to know your club peers can help you later on because they may know someone who can help you. These connections may be extremely valuable for whatever goal you are pursuing.
Lastly, joining a club gives you the possibility of eventually holding a leadership position which is great for all the previous benefits I mentioned and more! For example, by holding the position of president or even secretary, you will learn how to guide others apart of the club. Not only this, but colleges really like when a student has held a position because it shows commitment, hard work, as well as other qualities that colleges value.
With all these benefits, I really hope you consider joining a club as it will be something you definitely won’t regret! And, yes, while joining extracurricular activities for college and future career opportunities is important, make sure to choose something you enjoy and have fun!
Thank you for reading this far, and those were my two cents about the benefits of joining a club.
