STRESS and Tips to Alleviate It

Hi, my name is Marly Aronin. I am a sophomore at Desert Mountain High School, a student in the IB MYP program, and a member of the National Honor Society. Just like most high school students, I am constantly under a lot of stress whether it is from school, friends, or even daily life. I am here to share ways that are helpful to me when I am under a lot of stress.

  1. Find something you enjoy doing alone (listening to music, walking your dog, meditating, etc.)

  2. Write your thoughts down in a journal.

  3. Reach out to other people in your situation and see how they are doing.

Identify why you are stressed.

Before I get into ways to relieve stress, think about why you are stressed. Is it that B that is one percent away from an A? Is it about your parents who are constantly fighting? Or is it about your future, and that you have absolutely no clue what you want to do with your life? All of these things are completely normal causes of stress. As a high school student, you are already juggling so many things like school work, college, and family life. There is almost never a time where something is not on your mind, so it is almost impossible to have a calm, peaceful train of thought. I am not here to say that you will be completely calm and under no stress if you follow my directions, but instead, I am here to help you manage the stress that you are under.

Find something you enjoy doing alone.

It is so important to find something you enjoy doing alone because as you grow out of relationships and friendships, you will always have that one special activity. Something I enjoy doing is walking my dog while blasting my favorite music. This is something I look forward to doing nightly because I know that in this thirty minutes, I will not be bothered about my school work or brought into any kind of teenage drama.

Journaling

Another thing that has helped me relieve stress is journaling. Growing up, I thought it was weird to write down your thoughts, but now that I am in high school it is my way of expressing my worries out loud, even if it is just on paper. You can even decorate your journal any way you want with colors or pictures letting people know that is yours and NOT to touch it.

Talk to others.

Lastly, it is always comforting when you talk with people who are going through the same problems that you are. I recommend finding someone, probably not your best friend, but someone you know that you can talk to about your feelings. When you are going through personal matters, you think you are alone, but you are not.

I hope this helps whoever is reading this blog come to peace with the fact that it is normal to be under stress, especially as you are going through high school. However, there are ways that you can overcome stress because I know it can be overwhelming at times.
