In-State vs Out-of-State

My name is Evander Laahs, I’m a senior AP student and an NHS member and everyone should consider the benefits and downsides of In or Out of State education. Full disclosure, I’m attending ASU next year and fully believe that attending in-state is a better option, but there are benefits to being out-of-state.

In-State

The biggest benefit of attending in state is the cost. No matter how you are paying for college, if you take out a loan or are on a full scholarship, the lower the cost the better off you are. With college becoming more and more expensive, costs are becoming more important than ever when considering college.

Another benefit of attending an in-state college is that you can be close to home. Being close to home can be great for a lot of people, but it’s not for everyone. It’s important to decide whether or not you want to stay close to home, as you may have several options for colleges that are in-state.

Out-of-State

Out of state schools open up your options. If you choose to go out of state you can probably find the perfect program for you. While Arizona does have good universities, out-of-state schools offer a greater variety of specialized programs. Arizona schools are good overall but they don't excel in any one category very well. If you can find a program that perfectly suits your interests then absolutely that is the place for you.

Conclusion

At the end of the day the best college for you is unique to you, and no amount of advice can find the perfect school just for you. In-state is what I think is right for me, but I’m sure that you will find a school right for you whether it is in-state or out-of-state.
