How to Balance Sports and Academics: Advice from a Senior

Olivia Kim, Senior, AP Student, NHS Member

Want some advice from a senior about how to balance sports and academics? It may seem challenging, but with these tips, you are sure to be both a good student and player.

1. Academics come first

a. Every student-athlete can relate to the feeling of wanting to play your sport rather than do your homework. I am a tennis player and I ALWAYS wanted to be on the tennis court rather than at home studying for a test. But I had to remind myself that school always comes first.

2. Have a planner

a. Having a planner can really help you visualize what you need to get done that day, as well as remind you of upcoming assignments or upcoming games. A planner can also be used to help you remember when you have sports games relative to the amount of homework you have that day. Make sure you check it each day and get done what is on the list for that day.

3. Don’t procrastinate until the last minute

a. Especially as student-athletes, it is important that you stay on top of your schoolwork and get assignments done at least 1 day before they are due. Balancing both sports and school is difficult, so making sure you have a little wiggle room in case something happens is very important. You never know when an emergency is going to come up and you have an important homework assignment due that night.

4. Set a day during the week as your “rest day”

a. It is very important that you set at least one day, if not two days, during the week as your rest day. Playing a sport almost everyday during the week, on top of loads of homework can be extremely stressful. Putting your mental and physical health first is the first step to success. By rest day, I mean finishing most of the heavy homework, like busy work and studying for tests, so on your rest day you can just do a light review and spend the day for yourself. Having a rest day will motivate you to want to finish your homework during the week so you can relax during that one day of the week.

5. Lastly, and the most important, is COMMUNICATION

a. Playing any sport in high school comes with its challenges, so

communication is a must. If you know you have an away game on a Tuesday and you are missing class that day, or you know you are going to have trouble finishing the assignment, talk to your teacher. Teachers are willing to work with you to make your learning experience the best it can be according to you. If you communicate with them and let them know what’s going on, they will understand and work with your schedule.

YOU GOT THIS! :)
