Prepping for your AP Exams

Danielle Emanuele, AP Student, NHS Member

Hi there, I’m Danielle, and I am a junior who is taking AP/honors classes. Here are my 2 cents about preparing for AP exams. I have experience taking an AP exam last year, and I think that my consistent prep strategies were the key to getting a passing score. I will be taking 2 more AP exams this year and plan to implement the same strategies. If you are taking an exam, you should too!

The month before your exam:

  1. Start studying! AP exams test content from the whole year. I started preparing for the APUSH exam around a month before I took it.

  2. Invest in a prep book and commit to reading it and taking the practice tests. These books outline all the content you need to know on your exam.

  3. Take the included multiple choice/free response tests included in your prep book. Practicing with what you will see on the exam is a great way to prepare. You should go into an AP exam knowing how to approach the different sections.

  4. Figure out what the AP graders are looking for, and take these practice tests while keeping that in mind. Reading the exam rubrics is a great way to do this.

These are generally the best things to do in the month before your exam. Let’s talk about what you can do when you get even closer to the dreaded exam date...

The week/few days before your exam:

  1. Continue taking practice tests. Don’t give up! You should not be doing any less prep in the last week than you did when you first started studying.

  2. Continue reviewing excess material and your exam rubrics. You can also find material on the College Board website, such as practice multiple choice questions.

  3. Watch youtube videos on how to effectively approach your exam! Youtube videos really helped me understand what would be on the APUSH exam and what exactly the AP graders would be looking for on the free response/essay questions. Learn how to write to score points. You gain nothing from going into the exam and writing aimlessly, find out how to get your desired score!

In conclusion:

Don’t be too nervous! If you follow these steps and effectively prepare, you should do fine on all AP exams you are taking.

-Have you used any different strategies you would like to share that helped you receive a good score?-
